This project aims to inspire and educatepeople about the historic birth of theSākyamuni Buddha and, in doing so, integrate Buddhist wisdom withina moderncontext. The Buddha’s Birthday Education Project (BBEP) documentsthe spreadof Buddhism along the Silk Road and charts the migration andlocalisation of thereligion from its origins in northern India, along the Silk Roadand onwards tomany parts of Asia and, subsequently, into the West. The projectalsoacknowledges that our forefathers recognised the importance of theBuddha andtherefore have celebrated his birthday in many different ways. Asthe canonicalrecords are not easily accessible, this project team hastransformed them intoartworks, music and multimedia applications. Our localisation worktakes theperspective of today’s audience. The aim of the BBEP is to explainand givecontext to rituals that may appear foreign to people who have notgrown up withthe Buddhist tradition. We hope that BBEP may be a stepping stonetowardsembracing happiness and peace in multicultural and multi-faithsocietiesworldwide.
